Avebury Henge and Stone circles represent the world's largest megalithic stone circle, dating back roughly 4,600 years to the Neolithic period. As part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this vast monument features an outer circle encompassing two smaller inner circles. The visit will include a guided tour of the stones.

In addition we will visit AveburyManor.  It is a National Trust property consisting of a Grade I listed early 16th-century Manor House and its surrounding garden.  The Manor House was built on or near the site of Avebury Priory, a Benedictine cell or priory of the Abbey of St Georges, Boscherville, Normandy, founded in 1114.  Subsequently, the estate passed into the ownership of Fotheringhay College, Northamptonshire, in 1411.

The coach departs from the Holman Way car park, Topsham, at 0900.am.  Please note that there will be no pick up in Budleigh Salterton.  We plan to return to Topsham at 1800.

The cost is £52.00pp. This does not include lunch. In addition, non National Trust members will have to pay £13.30 to enter the Manor House. Cleeve Abbey

Cleeve Abbey is the most complete and unaltered set of monastic cloister buildings in England.  Visit, and you can explore the gatehouse, the refectory with its glorious angel roof, and an unusual ‘painted chamber’.  Cleeve’s greatest glory is the magnificent, tiled floor of its earliest refectory, dating from around 1270.  Click here for information.

Orchard Wyndham House

Sitting in a bowl on the edge of Exmoor, between the Brendon Hills to the East, and the Quantocks to the West, Orchard Wyndham is a secret and ancient place.  Look at it from the North, and it appears to be a stately medieval manor.    From the West, it looks more like a hamlet. Both are true.  It is a rambling, occasionally grand, often frail house that demands much maintenance and sensitive restoration.  It is also a living house, the roots of our family.  Click here for more information.

Barrington Court

An atmospheric fragment of old Somerset; the estate is the vision of Colonel Lyle and his architect James Edwin Forbes.  Whilst Court House remains closed for repair, the ground floor of Strode House is open, and there are glorious garden rooms, avenues,  and orchards to explore.  Click here for information.

Lytes Cary

Lytes Cary Manor is an intimate medieval manor house with a beautiful Arts and Crafts-style garden.  Originally the family home of Henry Lyte, where he translated the unique Niewe Herball book on herbal remedies, Lytes Cary was then lovingly restored in the 20th century by Sir Walter Jenner.  The garden contains a magical collection of topiary and herbaceous borders, while tranquil walks on the estate take you along the  River Cary.  Click here for more information.
